Program Requirements & Eligibility

At Canadian Pilot Academy, we’re committed to helping you achieve your dream of becoming a private pilot. Before you begin your training, it’s important to know the program’s requirements and eligibility criteria. We’ve outlined these key points to ensure you’re ready to take the first step toward earning your Private Pilot License and unlocking new flying opportunities.

To begin training for a PPL, you must be at least 17 years old (14 for your first solo flight) and hold a valid Category 1 or 3 medical certificate. These are the basic requirements to ensure you're fit for flight training.
To earn your PPL, you must complete a minimum of 45 hours of flight time, which includes 17 hours of dual instruction, three hours of cross-country flight time, and five hours of instrument flight time (three hours may be conducted on a flight simulator). Additionally, you need 12 hours of solo flight time, including five hours of cross-country flight, with at least one flight covering a minimum of 150 nautical miles with two full-stop landings.
As part of the PPL training, you must complete 12 hours of solo flight time, which includes five hours of cross-country flying. One of these cross-country flights must cover at least 150 nautical miles, with two full-stop landings at locations other than your departure point.
Yes, you can log up to five hours of flight training in an approved flight training device (simulator) as part of your 45 hours of total flight time for the PPL.
You must successfully complete a flight test to the standards outlined in the Flight Test Standards – Private License – Airplane (TP13723E). This test ensures that you can safely and competently operate an aircraft under the requirements of the PPL.
You are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of private pilot airplane ground school instruction. This must cover the mandatory subject areas specified in the PPL curriculum, which include topics like aerodynamics, navigation, and flight safety.
To obtain your PPL, you must achieve at least a 60% score on the written Private Pilot License – Airplane (PPAER) examination, which tests your knowledge of aviation theory.
